Episode 61: SoulCare™ Through the Ministry of Small Groups (with Scott Mehl)

by | Nov 25, 2025

We are talking to small group leaders for today’s conversation. Have you ever wondered what your role is as a small group leader? Is it to lead discussions about the latest sermons or to be hospitable and make sure there are good snacks? And just how do small groups intersect with SoulCare™?

To help guide us through this discussion and provide wisdom is my guest, Scott Mehl. Scott is the Managing Director of the Institute for Biblical Counseling and Discipleship (IBCD) and a Fellow with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). He is also the Senior Pastor of Cornerstone church in West Los Angeles. Scott is also the author of two books: Loving Messy People and Redeeming Sex in Marriage.

In this episode, Scott shares practical ways to show love for people, why many small group leaders experience a lack of confidence, how Scripture contains wisdom for whatever issues we may be facing, and much more.

Key Takeaways

  1. Small group leaders are the front line of SoulCare™. Every day ministry doesn’t happen in the church. It majorily happens over text, in coffee shops, and in our homes. It’s important that we, as a church, invest in and equip our small group leaders to do this work.
  2. Just because a term doesn’t appear in Scripture doesn’t mean it isn’t addressed. Culture uses many different terms or jargon for our problems that wouldn’t appear if you did a search for them in your Bible app. But Scripture is still sufficient for addressing any problem we may have. For instance, while “depression” doesn’t appear in the Bible, we can find all sorts of passages that address mourning, grieving, and sadness. Just take a look at Job!
  3. Every Christian can do the work of SoulCare™. The most important thing we possess to help guide our fellow man or woman is compassion and care for one another. You don’t have to have all the book knowledge or know the perfect Bible verse to throw at the situation. Christ equips us to live out the Gospel in a way that changes the lives we touch.
