Episode 56: An Experience of Deconstruction (with Henry Nightingale & Christian Martin)

by | Sep 16, 2025

It’s Kari Gross again, and I’m back with Henry Nightingale and Christian Martin, the co-hosts of a Christian gaming podcast called Courage Wisdom Power. If you missed our first episode with them, you’ll want to be sure to go back and listen to it here.

Many pastors and elders can experience discouragement and doubt in their counseling, especially when they come face-to-face with challenging topics that cut to the foundation of faith. For this conversation, Christian is sharing one scenario counselors may face from his personal experience of deconstructing his faith and how it was restored.

In this episode, Christian and Henry discuss their personal experience with deconstruction, what it means when someone deconstructs their faith, ways we can minister to those who are deconstructing, and much more.

Key Takeaways

  1. God works through those around us. People can often speak about how God seems far off or like He doesn’t care about their personal lives. But, as we heard from Christian, they come to realize that God is present and working through people around them.
  2. Anyone can deconstruct their faith. Christian was raised in a faith-filled home and attended church regularly. We may incorrectly assume that if someone is firmly planted in the church, they are not at risk for deconstruction.
  3. Welcome questions and watch for warning signs. Those who are deconstructing feel as though they no longer align with the faith they once had. One of the ways we can minister to them is to welcome tough questions and help them work out their faith. One of the signs that someone is about to deconstruct is that they will begin to isolate themselves from previously close friends.

Meet Henry & Christian

Henry Nightingale and Christian Martin are the co-hosts of a Christian gaming podcast called Courage Wisdom Power. Through this podcast, they encourage listeners to consider how they consume and play video games from a biblical worldview. Henry and Christian unpack the stories, messages, and ideologies of not only the games, but the people who created them.
