Many pastors are burned out, have limited margins, and come from a seminary that didn’t necessarily train and equip them for the counseling aspect of SoulCare. The need for gifted people who are not only good counselors but also enjoy coaching and mentoring others is vital to creating a church culture of biblical SoulCare.
In our latest podcast episode, I have the privilege of being joined by two of our supervising and lead counselors, Julie Wieland and Rosie Pierson. In this episode, you’ll hear about the role of the Apprenticeship Program, the impact of supervising counselors, how God will mold you into the type of counselor you were meant to be, and much more.

Key Takeaways
- Utilize available resources. Supervising counselors can help new counselors utilize every resource. They can help new counselors tap into the authority of Scripture, think wholly about complex problems, and also become aware of other resources. Where previously there were only one or two resources on a topic, today there is a plethora of resources that cover both broad and specific topics.
- God has uniquely gifted you. The goal of a supervising counselor is not to make you into the kind of counselor that they are but rather to help God mold you into the type of counselor He has gifted you to be. We are each uniquely gifted and that will impact how we counsel.
- Supervising counselors teach through experience. A supervising counselor is able to use the counseling appointment to guide you to develop discernment. You can always read something in a book, but you have to have practical experience in order to develop your skills as a counselor to discern and guide an individual.
