We are taking a closer look at something we talk about all the time on this podcast and that is the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC), specifically their fellow portion of the certification process.
It is such a privilege to have an ACBC Fellow on the show to talk about this. John Lehman is an ACBC Fellow, an author, and has been the pastor for counseling, families, and missions at Hampton Park Baptist Church in Greenville, SC.
In this episode, we discuss the role of an ACBC Fellow, how to apply to become one, how this role benefits your church, and more.

Key Takeaways
- Know it, then show it. It’s so important for counselors to ask their counselees to know the truth, but also to show it. This is when belief turns into action. One of the ways we do this is by assigning homework that applies to what the counselee is going through.
- A Fellow is a vital role in the ACBC Certification. ACBC Fellows are those who supervise incoming ACBC counselors in Phase 3 of certification. Fellow membership is reserved for men who demonstrate unique abilities to counsel, who serve as supervisors of counselors in training, and who provide leadership in applying biblical counseling principles to life.
- The ACBC Fellow Certification process exists to equip your church to serve better. You may see the extensive list of requirements and feel like this is taking some of the authority of your church away from biblical counseling. However, this process is designed to equip and encourage your counselors to continue to do the work of soul care with excellence.
