Episode 50: Partnerships that Strengthen (with Counsel Advocate Couple)

by | Jun 24, 2025

Have you ever wondered what happens when you send your people to a three-day intensive? What did they learn? Was it true to Scripture? How can you build on what they achieved there?

This is the topic we are covering today, along with Ben and Ailey Holman, and Kris and Amanda Mettlemen, who recently attended a retreat at Twelve Stones. These four are close friends, and they also share a counselee and counsel advocate couple relationship.

In this episode, you’ll learn what is involved in a retreat, what an advocate couple is, how churches can effectively use partnership ministries, and much more.

Key Takeaways

  1. We all need help. There isn’t a single person who is not in need of help as we navigate our sin, behaviors, and specific situations in life. Seeking out another couple to serve as a mentor or advocate couple should only serve to strengthen your relationships.
  2. There is value in getting highly focused counseling. You will encounter some situations that can benefit from a more focused approach over a period of time. For instances like that, a retreat like Twelve Stones is highly beneficial.
  3. Key partnerships need to have trust. There are many organizations and therapists outside the church. We want to approach partnerships cautiously, having done our due diligence to ensure they are operating in line with Scripture. When you are partnering with a ministry like Twelve Stones, their work serves to come alongside the local church and strengthen the work they are already doing.

Meet the Counselee and Counsel Advocate Couple

Ben and Ailey Holman are the counselee couple. Ben is a Physician Assistant in Orthopedic Surgery, the Supervising and Lead Counselor at Biblical Counseling Ministries, and the Director of Biblical Counseling at New Castle Bible Church. They attend New Castle Bible Church in Mackinaw, Illinois, and have six children.

Kris and Amanda Mettlemen are close friends of Ben and Ailey and serve as their advocate couple.
